Our lovely sign we had at Hwy 6 and Hebron Rd. is down. Not by wind or storm or of our chosing, but because of MODOT regulations.
Unbeknownst to us, there appears to be a law from the 1960’s that states several regulations about signs, and what can be on them, or how close they must be to your business or other businesses, and so on. Although they don’t enforce the law on every state road in MO, we were told we must take our sign down. Now we would still be able to erect another sign, in the same place, on Hebron Rd as this one was, but with less wording. No business logo on it, no mention of the farm store, no hours we are open; only Faithful Acres Alpacas and the address with a directional arrow. Of course that is another $400+ dollars to have another sign made, and a $200 application fee and $50 a year permit fee to MODOT.
Silly law if you ask me. And one that hinders rural businesses. And one day we may concede and erect another sign at that corner. But for now we will put our lovely signs at the entrance to our property and hope people will still be able to find us. Sometimes it’s just the principle of the thing.
